Son Little Details Self-Titled Debut LP

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Aug 11, 2015

Following collaborations with the Roots and a production gig with Mavis Staples, New York-based soul artist Son Little has revealed that a debut LP is on the way this fall. His self-titled record arrives October 16 through Anti-.

The collection follows the Things I Forgot EP from 2014, and includes that record's "Your Love Will Blow Me Away When My Heart Aches." It's noted that the upcoming 12-song set reflects on "the places [Little's] lived, traveled, and played to, places explored and discovered."

"I hear places in the songs without trying to evoke them while writing," Son Little said in a statement. "I can trace where a lot of my music came from, as my life and my family touch so many different places. I can hear Lake Charles, Louisiana in my voice, the way I say some of the words; I hear New York in my lyrics. Detroit is a place I haven't spent a ton of time in, but if I explore the music of Detroit, I can hear myself in there, too."

The record is said to explore various textures of American music, and spikes arrangements with the sounds of banjos ("Doctor's In"), kids keyboards ("Go Blue Blood Red") and the influence of Howlin' Wolf ("Carbon"). Thematically, first single "Lay Down" apparently weighs in on how relationships impact our day-to-day.

"I wrote this song lying in bed with my lady, listening to the tea kettle whistle," the artists explains. "I think about how complicated our lives are, all the ones and zeros distract us from what we really need and want. Sometimes I just want to take your love and hide."
