Toronto roots veterans Skydiggers' newest project Here Without You finds the band looking to the past and reinterpreting the work of the Byrds' songwriter Gene Clark. An intriguing listen for fans of either group, the album is streaming a week early right here at Exclaim!
On their latest offering, Skydiggers cover Byrds classics like "Eight Miles High" and "Feel a Whole Lot Better," but also delve deeper in to the lesser known solo catalogue of Clark's for tracks like "One in a Hundred" and "She Don't Care About Time."
"There is something about Gene Clark's songs that struck a deeper chord with us," the band explained in a statement. "This doesn't feel like a tribute record, because the songs have always felt personal. It seems like we've been fans of the Byrds forever, so to say that we've just discovered Gene Clark's songwriting contributions to the band makes it seem like he's been hiding in plain sight all of these years."
Aiming to honour Clark's penchant for effortlessly and expertly weaving together melody, chords and a lyric, the band still manage to put their own fresh, yet familiar spin on the classic tunes.
Here Without You lands on May 13 via Latent Records, but you can spend some quality time with the new album right now in the player below. Scroll past the band's upcoming tour dates and hit play to give it an advanced listen.
