The estate of the beloved late Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor has demanded that Donald Trump stop using her rendition of "Nothing Compares 2 to U" at his presidential rallies, claiming she would be "disgusted, hurt, and insulted."
In a joint statement issued to Variety, O'Connor's estate and label Chrysalis Records ordered Trump to cease use of her music immediately.
“Throughout her life, it is well known that Sinéad O’Connor lived by a fierce moral code defined by honesty, kindness, fairness, and decency towards her fellow human beings,” the statement reads. “It was with outrage therefore that we learned that Donald Trump has been using her iconic performance of 'Nothing Compares 2 U' at his political rallies."
It continues, “It is no exaggeration to say that Sinéad would have been disgusted, hurt, and insulted to have her work misrepresented in this way by someone who she herself referred to as a ‘biblical devil.’ As the guardians of her legacy, we demand that Donald Trump and his associates desist from using her music immediately."
O'Connor died of natural causes at age 56 last July. Her estate's request on her behalf is just the latest in a long line of musicians speaking out against Trump using their songs at his rallies. Earlier this year, Johnny Marr said "consider this shit shut down right now" when the Smiths' "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" was (unsubtly) used at an event backing the former president's re-election campaign.
