Shia LaBeouf has denied "each and every allegation" of physical and emotional abuse in the lawsuit lodged against him by former girlfriend FKA twigs. In fact, according to newly obtained court documents, he is even saying his actions were made in "self-defence."
The 34-year-old actor filed his official response to the lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on February 5, Page Six reports. And as you can see, LaBeouf's legal filing seems to contradict his initial response in December, when the actor stated he had been "abusive to myself and everyone around me for years."
As previously reported, FKA twigs — whose real name is Tahliah Barnett — accused LaBeouf of sexual battery, assault and infliction of emotional distress, in addition to knowingly giving Barnett a sexually transmitted disease.
However, LaBeouf's legal team stated Barnett has "not suffered any injury or damage as a result of Defendant's actions." They also claimed that LaBeouf's alleged conduct was "reasonably necessary for his self-defence and/or safety."
In the legal response LaBeouf's attorneys went on to state "none of the acts alleged were based on sex and/or the conduct was not sexual." They added that Barnett's "own conduct" and/or that of an "intervening third party" was a "superseding cause of the alleged injuries" made to her.
When asked for comment by Page Six, Barnett's lawyer Bryan Freedman said the following: "Upon being confronted with Ms. Barnett's lawsuit, Mr. LaBeouf admitted his reprehensible conduct and then checked himself into some type of inpatient treatment. To the extent his 5 week treatment has been focused on denials and gaslighting, he may want to revisit the type of help he is receiving. Mr. LaBeouf's legal tact and recovery plan, while not surprising, are poorly misguided self help strategies."
As reported earlier this week, LaBeouf is formally taking a hiatus from acting as he seeks treatment in an inpatient facility. He's also parted ways with his agency CAA.
The actor previously responded to the lawsuit by saying: "I have no excuses for my alcoholism or aggression, only rationalizations. I have been abusive to myself and everyone around me for years. I have a history of hurting the people closest to me. I'm ashamed of that history and am sorry to those I hurt. There is nothing else I can really say."
LaBeouf added, "I am not cured of my PTSD and alcoholism, but I am committed to doing what I need to do to recover, and I will forever be sorry to the people that I may have harmed along the way."
