Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings to 'Give the People What They Want'

BY Gregory AdamsPublished May 8, 2013

Old-school soul solicitors Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings recently took some time off the road supporting their 2010 LP I Learned the Hard Way to work on some new tunes, and now the band will let loose those recordings as Give the People What They Want. Fans can pick up the fittingly titled full-length August 6 through Daptone Records.

A press release notes that after a few years of festival performances and club tours around the world, Jones and the Dap-Kings retreated to Bushwick's Daptone House of Soul Studios to record their fifth LP. It reportedly has "sharp danceable funk grooves" and "sweet soul hooks" supporting Jones' powerful, impassioned pipes.

Between its opening timpani roll, hard-blasting horns and percussive stomps, opener "Retreat!" runs both ominous and lush. You can stream the song down below. Elsewhere, "We Get Along" is reportedly a "feel-good anthem."

You can see the detailed tracklisting down below and the album art above.
