Sara Simms

"Heart Shaped Box" (Nirvana cover) (video)

Toronto-based DJ, turntablist and producer Sara Simms unleashes her latest single today (February 14) via her own Simmetry Sounds, and Exclaim! is giving you an exclusive first look at the accompanying music video.

"Heart Shaped Box" hears Simms putting her own spin on Nirvana classic, upping the song's tempo and outfitting it with thumping beats and Simms's vocals. As for the video, it's an homage to grunge that finds Simms and her band (featuring Melle Oh and Erica EGR Balon) loading into the Rivoli and performing for a crowd of randy concertgoers beneath a sea of fog.

In addition to the song's obvious tip of the hat to Kurt Cobain and co., the visuals also take inspiration from scenes in Nirvana's original videos for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Heart-Shaped Box."

The whole thing was captured to film by director Katherine Kwan (whose name Exclaim! readers should recognize from her work with Exclaim! TV).
