Royal Tusk

'Mountain' (EP stream)

BY Matthew RitchiePublished Jun 3, 2014

Up-and-coming Alberta-bred pop rock unit Royal Tusk first grabbed our attention back in May when it was announced that the Edmonton five-piece were the latest signees to Hidden Pony Records. Their debut EP, Mountain, won't be out until June 10. But while you wait, stream the six-song set in its entirety on Exclaim.ca.

Aided by the help of production pair Gus Van Go and Werner F (Hollerado, Jeremy Fisher), Mountain finds the young quintet surveying the Canadian musical landscape and developing their own take on melodious FM rock. Tracks like "Letter" and album opener "Shadow of Love" recall the melancholic pop of the West Coast's turn-of-the-century rock revivalism, while croon-heavy cuts like "Years Ago" and "Jesus Saves" camp out in your ear drums thanks to the group's melodic riffing and ascending harmonies.

Hear for yourself by listening to the six-track recording in the player below. If that's not enough, catch the group as they cross the Prairies and play a number of dates around Saskatchewan and Ontario later this month.
