Robert Pollard

We All Got Out Of The Army

BY Stephen CarlickPublished Feb 16, 2010

Nobody churns out material like former Guided By Voices front-man Robert Pollard. Between current projects Boston Spaceships, Circus Devils, Cosmos and his solo moniker, the man released more than ten albums between 2008 and 2009. But, then again, nobody recording that much music maintains the quality that Pollard manages either. His latest, We All Got Out Of The Army, shows Pollard back in the musical form he was in during the mid- to late '90s when he created Guided By Voices' landmarks Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes and Mag Earwig. His pop sensibilities are all wonderfully intact, with nary an iota of his former quirk absent. Hectic choruses make way for tight, catchy ones, especially on album highlights "Post-Hydrate Update" and "Cameo of a Smile," and you needn't worry about a single bum track on this 17-song homerun. Consistency was the key to Guided By Voices' best work, and Pollard has figured that out once again. Yep, it's a good time to be a Robert Pollard fan, but keep your schedule open; you never know how many albums he'll pop out in 2010.
