R. Kelly Causes Uproar at Austin Event after Singing for Less Than Five Minutes, Sets 'Write Me Back' Release Date

R. Kelly upset a number of fans expecting a performance out of the eccentric R&B singer at a "celebrity hosting" event last weekend in Austin, TX, that saw him sing for less than five minutes. The confusion apparently came about due to last Sunday's (May 13) "An Intimate Night w/ R Kelly (Mothers Day Weekend)" event not explicitly stating Kels would be singing. That said, tickets for the event ranged from $30 to a whopping V.I.P. and bottle-service price tag of $950.

As Austin 360 reports it, Kelly showed up onstage around 12:45 a.m. to hand out a series of high-fives to patrons before walking over to the V.I.P. section. A couple of minutes later, the performer grabbed a microphone to deliver three-quarters of "Ignition (Remix)" and a quick a cappella take at "Bump N' Grind" that the crowd jumped in on and eventually took over. That was apparently it for Kels, who took the rest of the night off.

Fans became restless and booed when he wouldn't sing any more hits, but both promoters and Kelly himself explained to the crowd that he wasn't contractually bound to do anything other than be present in the club. Whether he sang or not was up to him, and he didn't.

You can see a sample of the confusion below, which has a local DJ revving up the crowd by saying they should run him out of town before dropping a succinct "Fuck You" to the singer.

On the bright side, ticketing website Eventbrite is refunding tickets to the event due to the promoters not clearly stating Kelly would be hosting, not performing.

In other news, you can hear the singer's new disco jam "Feelin' Single," off his impending Write Me Back, down below as well. A release date has yet to be determined.

UPDATE: Write Me Back is reportedly now due out June 26.
