While many of Kanye West's fans are no doubt disappointed over the string of postponements and cancellations afflicting his "Yeezus" tour, fellow G.O.O.D. Music member Q-Tip is more upset about the Confederate flag-brandishing T-shirts being sold at the merch stands.
Tip, who's A Tribe Called Quest are playing their apparently last-ever shows with Kanye in New York City, took issue with the clothing items, which as previously reported includes shirts featuring a grim reaper with a Confederate flag for a cloak, a skull in front of a Confederate flag and a skeleton wearing a headdress. Tip made his message clear over Twitter earlier this week with a curtly worded "Fuck the Confederate flag."
He continued: "I love Kanye no shots but my people continue to suffer psychologically from hardships that happened under that banner."
West has received negative attention over the shirts due to the flag's association with the Confederate States of America during the Civil War and its connotations of slavery. The rapper has, however, defended his use of the controversial iconography and explained his subversive take on the flag.
West told 97.1 AMP Radio: "React how you want. Like I said, any energy you got is good energy. You know, the Confederate flag represented slavery, in a way — that's my abstract take on what I know about it, right? So I made the song 'New Slaves.' So I took the Confederate flag and made it my flag. It's my flag now! Now what are you gonna do?"
