The Provincial Archive Unveil New EP, Premiere "Bad Connection"

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Nov 5, 2015

Edmonton outfit the Provincial Archive delivered their It's All Shaken Wonder LP last year, and now they've unveiled plans to follow it up with a new EP. The self-titled six-song effort will arrive on 12-inch vinyl on November 20 through the band's own Consonant Records.

In addition to six new tracks, the upcoming release also showcases the band's revised lineup. The group unexpectedly downsized to a three-piece due to the departure of keyboardist and photographer Nathan Burge. Just a month after he left the band, the remaining members hit the studio with producer Nik Kozub to record the new material live off the floor.

The Provincial Archive hears the band of the same name drawing on influences from the mid-'90s alt-rock glory days, pulling in "dirty guitars" and "fuzzy vocal hooks" that wouldn't sound out of place next to the likes of early Weezer, Elliott Smith and Nirvana.

You can hear the first sampling of the throwback sound on the EP's lead track "Bad Connection." Omnipresent distortion crashes against hooky pop vocals throughout the catchy, nostalgia-drenched track, and you can hear it for yourself in the player below.
