Pocket Dwellers

Digitally Organic

BY Del F. CowiePublished Dec 1, 2000

Relentless playing on the live circuit has obviously paid dividends for Toronto's Pocket Dwellers, who display their increasingly honed chops on their second release, Digitally Organic. Their eclectic brand of taut jazz-funk seamlessly integrates the seven-piece band, producing some highly enjoyable jams. Standout track "Concepts" points to the intimate group chemistry by steadily and effectively escalating the rhythmic tension. On this track, inescapably energetic and intelligent MC Nigel Williams crams a sizeable chunk of the Western literary canon into his lyrics. Evidently, the Pocket Dwellers have taken note of the Roots' Do You Want More and know how to fuse jazzy instrumentation and rhyme without sounding corny and have produced an accomplished and polished effort.
