Perfume Genius has announced a new album, Ugly Season, due out June 17 via Matador.
The album was written as the musical accompaniment to the dance piece The Sun Still Burns Here. That piece, by Perfume Genius and choreographer Kate Wallich, was performed at US residencies throughout 2019, at which time Perfume Genius shared the tracks "Pop Song" and "Eye in the Wall."
Despite being the accompaniment to a dance piece, a press release refers to it as an "album" without qualification, suggesting that it is indeed the official followup to 2020's Set My Heart on Fire Immediately and not simply a soundtrack or stopgap release.
The album was produced by Perfume Genius along with Blake Mills, and was made in collaboration with Perfume Genius's partner Alan Wyffels. A short film directed by Jacolby Satterwhite will accompany it.
