Perfect Pussy's Meredith Graves Talks Blood-Infused Vinyl and Debut LP

BY Cam LindsayPublished Mar 11, 2014

Syracuse punks Perfect Pussy are set to release their debut album, Say Yes to Love via Captured Tracks on March 18. As previously reported, a limited edition of the album will contain some blood belonging to singer Meredith Graves inside clear vinyl. Speaking with Exclaim!, Graves explains that she just blurted out the idea during a conversation with Captured Tracks boss Mike Sniper.

"I said, 'How about we do something really crazy and do a letterpress cover?'" she says. "To which he said, 'Sweetheart, we can do a letterpress for all of your releases. You'll have to come up with something better than that.' So we thought for about half an hour, and I said, 'Obviously my ideas aren't good enough. So if you want something limited let's just put my blood in the record!' I thought it would get a laugh from him, but he just paused and said, 'Now we're getting somewhere.' I actually have a friend that lets me do that!"

Graves, who posed with the jar of blood, says the blood is menstrual, mostly because it was the only way to do it. "It wasn't like I went and got blood drawn," she says, laughing. "I don't have health insurance!"

As for the actual music, Graves says the band were adamant about staying consistent with the sound of their self-released cassette, last year's I have lost all desire for feeling.

"We recorded it the same way we recorded the tape," Graves admits. "It's pretty much 'if it ain't broke don't fix it.' We like what we're doing. A band like us doesn't really advance. It's just the five of us doing whatever we want all at the same time. It's a really, really free-spirited group of people. We can't really do anything different."

The band will bring their free-spirited nature to the road for the next few months. You can find the dates below.
