Scott Kannberg, a former guitarist of sorta-big-deal indie rock legends Pavement, has been involved in a handful of projects over the years, including the Preston School of Industry. Most recently, though, he's been writing and recording his own work simply under his old rock handle Spiral Stairs, and now he's readied the debut LP under the pseudonym.
Titled The Real Feel, the record is due from Matador on October 20 with the above cover. It was recorded in Seattle, and features guest spots from members of the Posies, guitarist Ian Moore and Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew, among others.
In a press release from Matador, it tells us the record "has a vibe similar to classic '70s albums by Fleetwood Mac (Then Play On), Captain Beefhart [sic] (Safe As Milk), and guitar god Richard Thompson, not to mention Aussie psych rock icons Died Pretty. Comparisons aside, this is 100% Spiral Stairs rock, the same rock that made Pavement the most influential band of the '90s (take that Hoobastank!) and the same strange, dischordant, playful and melodic Spiral Stairs rock that your parents loved."
Spiral Stairs is expected to announce fall tour dates soon.
