After getting interviewed by Jarvis Cocker at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts yesterday (July 25), Paul McCartney revealed that he would be hanging around his home town to play a special secret gig this evening. The former Beatle took the stage at the iconic Cavern Club — but the show didn't quite go as planned.
McCartney stopped the set during his performance of Eddie Cochran's "Twenty Flight Rock" to address the audience members who weren't adhering to the phone ban.
"You've all been told not to take photos," McCartney said, according to reports from NME. "You're taking them, and you're taking them, and it's putting me off! So, you know, play by the rules, man!"
After attempting to start the song up again, he added, "The phone thing, I went to a Prince concert and he really was serious about that, he wouldn't start, you know. Put 'em down! You know what I'm saying?"
As previously reported, McCartney will release his latest solo LP Egypt Station on September 7 via Capitol Records. He'll also be heading out back on tour in support of the record, and you can see his upcoming shows here (though it will likely be a bit more difficult for him to ban phones in an arena setting).
