Orlando Gloom

'An Evening with Orlando' (EP stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished May 9, 2016

Orlando Gloom kicked off 2016 with the gloomy synth-pop single "Tongue-Tied," and now the Winnipeg musician (born Dave Shaw) is gearing up to drop his debut EP under that moniker. An apt introduction to the new project, the EP is entitled An Evening with Orlando, and Exclaim! is giving you the exclusive first listen.

The new five-song offering was written over the last year and hears Shaw tackling the theme of precariousness — or as he puts it, "losing your sense of orientation in the world and kind of being okay with that." It only makes sense then that it was written as he worked towards completing grad school.

Across the EP, he plays with bright bursts of percussive beats and shoegaze-y synths, blending those sounds together into a mesmerizing mix of emotional electro and pessimistic pop.
