Speaking at a preview screening for Peter Jackson's upcoming Beatles doc The Beatles: Get Back, former Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher said having his band compared to the Beatles was "embarrassing."
"When Oasis started, we were so big we were compared to them size-wise and musically, embarrassingly, compared to them as well," he said. "[It's embarrassing] because we weren't as good as them."
The two bands were regularly compared at the height of Oasis' popularity in the '90s, and the Gallaghers often talked about the Beatles' pretty-obvious influence on their music.
The humble sentiment that may not necessarily be shared by Gallagher's brother Liam, who said in a 2016 interview with Little White Lies that, "What we did in [three years] took the Beatles eight. Good, y'know, fuckin' rightly so." However, he did go on to admit that his vision of taking over the world Beatles-style didn't necessarily pan out, saying, "I thought America would buy it, everyone would buy it … But that my friend is cocaine for you."
Elsewhere in his conversation about The Beatles: Get Out, Noel said that the Fab Four have "definitely got the best tunes, hands down. In my record collection, they've got the greatest tunes by far."
He continued: "They influenced everybody who influenced everybody else, who influenced everybody that came and went. Their influence is absolute. I don't know a single guy playing the guitar or writing songs that wouldn't cite the Beatles as an influence."
The Beatles: Get Back will premiere on Disney+ in three separate parts, on November 25, 26 and 27.
