Nick Cave to Release Book Written on Airplane Sick Bags

BY Alex HudsonPublished Mar 20, 2015

Leave it to Nick Cave to turn an airplane barf bag into a work of art. The veteran songwriter is preparing to release a new book entitled The Sick Bag Song, and as the title suggests, it's based on Cave's scribbles on airline sick bags. This book will be published this spring through Canongate.

It chronicles Cave's 2014 North American tour with his band the Bad Seeds. According to a description from the publishers, Cave's scrawls eventually grew into "into a restless full-length epic, seeking out the roots of inspiration, love and meaning."

The book is available to order in two different versions. There's a paper-bound "Unlimited Edition," which consists of 176 pages, including 44 full-colour sick bag images. It's all housed in what's described as "a paper-cased clamshell protective box." Buyers will also get an e-book edition, plus an audiobook featuring Cave reading the whole thing.

This costs £30 ($56.23 Canadian) and can be ordered here. It comes out on April 8.

There's also a "Limited Edition," of which 10 are available for each of the 22 cities on the 2014 tour (making for 220 in total). Each of these come with a sick bag signed, hand-decorated and numbered by Cave himself. The book comes on clothbound hardback, while the audiobook comes on two white vinyl records. The package includes a bonus copy of the "Unlimited Edition."

This version costs a hefty £750 ($1405.79 Canadian) and will be available on June 4. It can be ordered here. Canadian fans may be interested to note that there are "Limited Edition" books for Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal.
