Montreal, QC blackened death metal legends Necronomicon have been in the game for two decades, continually pushing their sound forward with each new release. The trio's latest offering is their fifth full-length, Advent of the Human God, and it continues the tradition. The album finds frontman Rob "the Witch" Tremblay and company delving further into symphonic territory.
Necronomicon have incorporated more ambience and orchestral elements into their dark, extreme metal approach, starting with instrumental funeral march "The Descent," which leads into the bombardment of the title track. "The Golden Gods" and "I, Bringer of Light" are straight-up crushers, filled with obliterating rhythms and groove, while "Okkultis Trinity" and "Gaia" are symphonic interludes featuring gorgeous, yet ominous, tones.
Tracks likes "Unification of the Four Pillars" and "Crown of Thorns" are the best of both worlds, combining powerful brutality with soaring orchestral flourishes, while "The Fjord" contains acoustic guitars and tribal drums. Also featuring a stunning cover of Celtic Frost's "Innocence and Wrath," Advent of the Human God is a truly diverse album, perfectly balancing plenty of atmosphere with their iconic chugging riffs and pummelling blast beats.
