"Heavens to Purgatory" (Secret Sessions at TARA)

BY Ian GormelyPublished Aug 25, 2009

The Most Serene Republic always dig mixing their straight ahead pop songs with a dash of spacey-prog rock. It's worked well for the Toronto septet, as evidenced by their most recent effort ...And the Ever Expanding Universe. So it's interesting to hear the group stripped down to their bare bones on this latest track from The Audio Recording Academy's Secret Sessions.

Given their penchant for hooks, it should probably come as no surprised that with all the studio tricks removed, the band still sounds great, proving their mettle as songwriters as well as sonic manipulators. "Heavens to Purgatory" is no less engaging on its own that it is in its full studio glory, no small feat in an age where digital manipulation has replaced talent in the music industry.
