Christmas is exactly one week away, and many holiday plans are looking quite different this year. Montreal-based hip-hop label Trans Trenderz are embracing that idea with their new mixtape, It's a Very Trans Christmas.
Said label founder Blxck Cxsper in a statement, "Originally, I thought it would be cool to put together a Christmas tape with a bunch of trans people on it because the holidays are already triggering enough for us when there is no pandemic involved and I felt like the world could use some heartwarming — or ratchet — Christmas music to lift their spirits."
The five-track release features holiday-themed tracks from several of the label's members, including Lady Londyn's sultry and sumptuous "Milk & Cookies" and Evolation and Jae's wistful "New Holiday." The tape ends with Blxck Cxsper's "Sit on My Lap," which has been treated to a new music video featuring Cxsper relaxing at home, sipping eggnog and singing into a bottle of champagne.
On the tracks' subject matter, Cxsper noted, "Even though this mixtape was completely made by trans people, there isn't a single song on it about being trans. I think that's super important because oftentimes the focus is on our identities but that's not what we focus on as human beings. I'm focusing my work on trans people the same way some labels focus on people from a different city or a different music genre. Because everybody deserves to be in a space where their identity is the norm therefore they can be properly appreciated and valued for their individuality."
It's a Very Trans Christmas caps off a busy few months for Trans Trenderz. The label debuted their new roster in October with posse cut "Splash" and have kept busy since then with new tracks by members Apollo Flowerchild, Heather Hills and Lady Londyn. Expect more from the collective in 2021.
