Mocky

In Mesopotamia

BY Andy LeePublished May 1, 2003

To say that the debut by Toronto-born, London-based Mocky is schizophrenic is an understatement. Beginning with the robotic grind of "Shake Yer Ass,” In Mesopotamia explores such varied genres as electroclash, quirky pop, surreal R&B, and instrumental hip-hop. Mocky irreverently raps over a bleepy shuffle on "Munky ‘C’ Munky Do,” while fellow members of Toronto’s the Shit, Peaches and Gonzales, appear on the caustic, aptly named, "Heavy Shit.” Throughout it all, the only constant is Mocky’s peculiar sense of humour. Taken as a whole, In Mesopotamia is somewhat disjointed, but nonetheless a refreshing break from tired pop norms.
