Mitski Unveils 'Be the Cowboy' LP, Shares "Geyser" Video

Mitski's 2016 album Puberty 2 introduced her to new audiences and landed her a spot opening for Lorde's "Melodrama World Tour." Now the singer-songwriter has unveiled plans for her next studio album.

Be the Cowboy is due out on August 17 through Dead Oceans.

It hears Mitski breaking away from her reputation as a "fevered chosen girl" and establishing herself as a "woman in control," according to a press release. The new songs were written from the perspective of "a very controlled icy repressed woman who is starting to unravel."

That new persona isn't a completely fictional character, though the record does hear Mitski delving further into the realm of narrative and fiction — a change from the ultra-confessional style she's known for.

"Because women have so little power and showing emotion is seen as weakness, this 'character' clings to any amount of control she can get," Mitski said in a statement. "Still, there is something very primordial in her that is trying to find a way to get out."

The 14-song set was produced by Patrick Hyland, and the first sample of the new material has arrived with a Zia Anger-directed video for "Geyser."

As the title implies, the track conjures imagery of a woman finally letting out a surge of pent-up passion. Scroll past the Be the Cowboy tracklist to watch the "Geyser" clip below.
