Missing: James Brown's Body!

BY Stephen CarlickPublished Mar 12, 2010

UPDATE: Whew! A lawyer representing five of Brown's children has told TMZ that Brown's body hasn't gone anywhere and he is still resting safely in he crypt.

Stealing, say, Johnny Marr's guitar or even Ian Curtis's gravestone is one thing, but stealing a corpse? That's taking things to a new extreme. However, if we're to believe LaRhonda Pettit, one of James Brown's many illegitimate daughters, the body of the Godfather of Soul has been stolen from its crypt.

According to the New York Post, the body was being held for autopsy to determine whether Brown, who died at 73 years old on Christmas Day 2006, was murdered.

"My daddy's body has disappeared. I have no clue where it was taken, but I need to know where," she said. "I'm convinced his death was suspicious and I want the people responsible brought to justice."

Pettit is convinced that the pneumonia-related heart attack Brown suffered according to doctors is not the real cause of his death and is hell-bent on proving it: "The only way to do that is to exhume his body and have an autopsy," Pettit told the press. "I cannot understand why one was never conducted."

Pettit's obsession with Brown being murdered seems to be just a little off-balance, if you ask us. The illegitimate daughter, who underwent a DNA test just three years ago to prove she was Brown's offspring, commented, "It was common knowledge that my daddy took illegal drugs. He was also hooked on various prescription painkillers. At the very least there were enablers who helped cause his death."

Brown's body was being held in a temporary crypt in the home of his daughter Deanna Brown-Thomas while arrangements for a permanent grave were being organized.
