Miracle Fortress Returns with Sophomore LP, Readies Canadian Dates with Shad

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Mar 31, 2011

While Miracle Fortress's 2007 debut, Five Roses, had tinges of electronic music mixed in with its psychedelic rock and new wave influences, we had a feeling Graham Van Pelt was taking his project in a new direction for his next release. Just a few weeks ago, the Montreal-based songwriter treated a Toronto crowd to a dazzling laser light show and a handful of bass-heavy "bedroom club" thumpers from his upcoming album, Was I the Wave? Don't worry if you missed the gig though – Van Pelt has just announced a release date for the album, not to mention a couple of live dates.

Was I the Wave? will be unveiled April 26 in Canada on Secret City Records and on May 17 in the U.S. Unsurprisingly, the album is being touted as a more electronic affair than Five Roses, with Van Pelt acting as composer, arranger, producer and engineer. Being such a personal affair, it's fitting that the album "expresses themes of alienation, anonymity and the desire for intimacy."

If you want a taste of what's to come, you can grab a download of hazy, '90s-style ambient club jam "Raw Spectacle" for free over here. And if you pre-order the set now over here on the Miracle Fortress website, you will get a bonus remix of the tune courtesy of Pantha Du Prince. And note that if you are in the U.S., you can get the record on the Canadian release by ordering through the site.

If that weren't enough, Van Pelt is taking the project on the road this May as part of Exclaim!'s 19th anniversary tour, when he will be sharing the stage with Canadian rap sensation Shad.
