The Miles Between

Deceiver

BY Kevin HarperPublished Mar 24, 2009

Massachusetts metalcore band the Miles Between want you to know they are a "straight fucking edge" band (as proclaimed on "Redlands"). What better way to drive such messages than with down-tuned, chugging breakdowns? Ushered in with feedback, the open-palmed chug riffs start almost immediately. "We've still got clean lives and pure hearts," vocalist Chris bellows on "Northern Battersea." As usual, breakdowns are represented in spades, with each song punctuated by down-tuned, ridiculously simple blasts of open-palmed e-string bashing. The relatively brief 25-minute running time helps ease the brutality, with the album ending before monotony turns to migraine. These fast, brawny tunes will keep all-ages mosh pits flowing when the show inevitably hits town but unless you're seeking a heavy dose of preaching with your breakdowns, Deceiver may not be well received.
