Beyond the countless represses we may or may not actually need, Record Store Day is good for bands working outside their usual spectrum and offering up a unique release. Japanese noise guru Merzbow and U.S. experimental unit Xiu Xiu fall into the latter category, and are going to be issuing a full-length collaborative LP for the vinyl holiday. Better yet, you can stream the whole thing online ahead of time.
A press release notes that, as Merzxiu, the two acts have produced "two sides of brooding, pulsing noise to take you to a dark place." Want proof? The player down below will reveal various uncomfortable tones, from helicopter blade-style clicks and ear-bleeding feedback, to a big blanket of seizure-inducing white noise that comes across like an orchestra of dental suction devices.
The Merzxiu album is being delivered through Vancouver imprint Kingfisher Bluez on April 18, and it arrives in a limited edition pressing of 1,000 copies on splattered vinyl.
