As an artist, Jonathan Bates doesnt want to be pigeonholed for one sound, so he tries to cover all of his interests under the guise of Mellowdrone. His new EP, A Demonstration of Intellectual Property, does a good job in revealing his wide range of interests. However, Mellowdrone isnt a forum for anything special, and instead wanders between the same old redundant acoustic nonsense, Beck-like hipster experimentation and absurdly out of place nu-metal guitars. Once the electro of "beautiful day kicks in, all hope is lost, and Bates attempt at achieving something respectable and diverse becomes a laughing stock.
