Mellowdrone

a demonstration of intellectual property

BY Cam LindsayPublished Jun 1, 2003

As an artist, Jonathan Bates doesn’t want to be pigeonholed for one sound, so he tries to cover all of his interests under the guise of Mellowdrone. His new EP, A Demonstration of Intellectual Property, does a good job in revealing his wide range of interests. However, Mellowdrone isn’t a forum for anything special, and instead wanders between the same old redundant acoustic nonsense, Beck-like hipster experimentation and absurdly out of place nu-metal guitars. Once the electro of "beautiful day” kicks in, all hope is lost, and Bates’ attempt at achieving something respectable and diverse becomes a laughing stock.
