Published Apr 14, 2009Remember when we reported on Mark Sultan's Sub Pop single back in February and mentioned that he'd be sharing some news real soon? Well, not long after, Sultan updated his website without making much of a stir, and ended up dropping hints about some very exciting new projects.
For starters, apparently a new Mark Sultan solo album was put to tape in the fall of '08, but was shelved "due to some snags." Calling it one of the "best things" he's done, Sultan is not sure when it will be coming out. Fortunately, he has promised to record a new solo album sometime this spring, as well as songs paying tribute to Nolan Strong and Roy Orbison.
Besides that, Sultan also promises a new King Khan and BBQ Show album this year. "We're really stoked on it," he writes. "I dunno when it'll be out or on what label, but it's done and it's great."
Exciting news, right? Well, it gets better. When the Black Lips went on their highly controversial trip to India last year, they hid out in Berlin on their way home. During their stay, they ended up starting a whole new band with Khan and Sultan, and ended up writing and recording a full album in two days. The project is called the Almighty Defenders, and Sultan calls their album a "gospel-soaked gem."
If you're as sick as we are of waiting for release dates for all these promising albums, at least take comfort that Mark Sultan has been added as support for most of King Khan and the Shrines' upcoming North American tour. Sultan will be performing his one-man band routine as BBQ, although don't be surprised if Khan makes an appearance.
