Love, Lemonheads, Air and Mission of Burma Reissues On the Way

BY Brock ThiessenPublished Feb 21, 2008

Reissues are great — extra tracks, extra discs, fancied-up artwork, essays you are too lazy to read —but they can sure make a guy feel old sometimes. They bring up all those naïve-kid-in-a-record-store memories of when you bought the albums the first time ’round and replace them with "I am a 30-year-old dude who no longer ‘gets’ new music, so I may as well spend money on something I already own.” And if you are still young, well, reissues give you good reason to call your elders on their bluffs: Crooked Rain? More like Crooked Lame.

In a massive day of reissue announcements, here is the lowdown on four bands that are releasing some "classic” pieces of work (track listing and release dates to follow). First up is Love’s 1967 cooler-than-thou psych-folk-pop epic, Forever Changes, which Rhino is now bumping up to a hefty two discs on with a 40th anniversary "Collector’s Edition.” Second, the Lemonheads are releasing an expanded version of their 1992 alt-rock heartbreaker and used-bin classic, It’s a Shame About Ray, in the spring with ten extra tracks and a DVD. Next, French electro-lounge-pop act Air will be re-releasing a 10th anniversary edition of their debut Moon Safari with remixes, rarities, radio session, a DVD documentary and a big, fancy book. And finally, to just make everyone else seem small and a bit weak, Boston post-punkers Mission of Burma are giving much of their back catalog some reissue love, including 1981’s Signals, Calls & Marches, 1983’s Vs. and 1985’s The Horrible Truth About Burma, with a 32-book and DVD of live material with each album.
