Lorde's New Album Might Be Coming Sooner Than You Think: "I Don't Want to Wait"

"It's always my intention to move as quickly as I fucking can, and then that ends up taking different forms. But this one, I really am trying to."

Lorde has never been one to follow the rules. Whether they're the very literal ones prohibiting swimming in D.C.'s Potomac River or the unspoken acceptable two-year gap between big pop albums, she has safely never felt the need to abide. However, the New Zealander is apparently moving rapidly on the follow-up to Solar Power — so fast that it might be coming as soon as this year.

For context, the renowned onion ring reviewer has habitually taken to releasing albums within a relatively lengthy four years of one another; 2017's Melodrama came after 2013's Pure Heroine, with her most recent record following suit in 2021. In a new interview with Ensemble Magazine, Lorde revealed that she might be breaking this cycle for her next body of work.

First and foremost, the pop star revealed that her fourth LP is, in fact, in the works, which is already a promising start! "It has taken me quite a while [to start working on it]," she told Clem de Pressigny. "I mean, I do just take a long time… I do a lot of research, I write a lot down." She previously spoke about the long breaks she takes between albums in Vogue's 73 Questions interview series.

Lorde continued, "Sort of a big chunk of work before I actually start writing music. So yeah, that's been a really big part of it. It's been super exciting and I feel excited about what's coming," she teased.

When asked explicitly if fans were going to have to wait until the year 2025 to hear it, she said, "You know, it's my intention, it's always my intention, to move as quickly as I fucking can, and then that ends up taking different forms. But this one, I really am trying to. I don't want to wait, you know, so take from that what you will."

Even when de Pressigny pressed, the singer-songwriter wouldn't go so far as to rule out releasing new material in 2023. "Anything could happen," she said. "Let's see!"

That certainly sounds like a green light.
