Leonard Cohen

"You Want It Darker"

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Sep 21, 2016

National treasure Leonard Cohen turns 82 today (September 21), and he's celebrating in style by sharing the title track off his upcoming album, You Want It Darker.

The tune was recently teased during an episode of Peaky Blinders, but now you can hear the song in its entirety — and it's as moody, brooding, suspenseful and dark as the previously shared snippet made it seem. Cohen's gruff drawl is backed by ominous organ lines and rich backing vocals (courtesy of Montreal's Cantor Gideon Zelermyer and the Shaar Hashomayim Synagogue Choir), as it "delves into an unflinching exploration of the religious mind."

As previously reported, the upcoming album was produced by the musician's son, Adam Cohen. It marks his first studio album since 2014's Popular Problems, though Leonard Cohen also released a live collection called Live in Dublin last year.

Listen to "You Want It Darker" below. The album of the same name arrives on October 21 through Sony.
