Lappelectro

Closer Than They Appear

BY Andy LeePublished Sep 1, 2003

Led by singer and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Lapp, Victoria-based quartet Lappelectro aims to incorporate electronic elements into jazz while preserving its improvisational nature. It’s not an easy marriage but, for the most part, their debut EP is a success. Freewheeling jams coalesce into songs flourished with strings, horns, and "sonic sculpting” in an amazingly organic manner. Sampled loops sit comfortably beside orchestral accompaniment on "Up The Ante,” while "Left Ol’ Tennessee” is a Southern-fried lament with crying fiddle and aching vocals. The five tracks presented here offer a tasty glimpse of the potential yet to be realised by Lappelectro.
