Kaytranada may have declared Instrumental Hip-Hop Is Dead on a recent mixtape, but the Montreal producer's career is very much alive, since he just signed a deal with XL Recordings.
Speaking with The Fader, Kaytranada revealed that he has an EP coming out this summer on the celebrated imprint.
"It's the record label that I really wanted to put something out with for a long time," he said. "I listen to their artists — M.I.A., Tyler, the Creator — and it's one of the labels I always wanted to be on and eventually, it happened."
While the details of the EP are still up in the air, Kaytranada described the collection as "abstract-feeling" and "uptempo, neo-soul." He's aiming to "make it as funky as possible," with guests including Vic Mensa, Kareem Riggins, Reva DeVito, Shay Lia and more.
In the meantime, Kaytranada has released a 20-track collection of beats and remixes called Whatever. It's available for free here.
He also told The Fader that he's working on a side-project with his brother called the Celestics. They've got a hip-hop mixtape finished and ready to be released soon.
