Contemporary jazz wizard Kamasi Washington has shared a new song called "The Garden Path," his first piece of new music since he covered Metallica's "My Friend of Misery" for last year's The Metallica Blacklist

"The world feels turned upside down," said Washington of the new track. "There's so much push and pull in every direction, from everyone you meet — no one knows what to think, who to believe, or how to approach life right now. No matter how smart you are, it's hard not to feel blind."

The percussive, burbling song is as lush and free-ranging as one would expect, book-ended by tides of voice and shot through with electrifying bolts of saxophone.

Tonight, Washington will make his late-night television debut performing the song on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. It seems wild that he's never played late-night before, but better late than never.
