Justin Vernon's Chigliak Label Marks First Release with Amateur Love Reissue

BY Alex HudsonPublished Mar 22, 2012

We've known about Justin Vernon's Chigliak label for some time, as the Bon Iver star first started speaking about the imprint a couple of years ago. Now, Chigliak has officially set the date for its first release: a reissue of Amateur Love's 2003 album It's All Aquatic.

The album will come out digitally and on vinyl on May 22. LP versions will come with a downloadable collection of ultra-rare tracks called the Ev Sessions. These were unfinished and, until now, unreleased.

In a statement, Vernon explained that the little-known It's All Aquatic, which previously came out only on CD, was the "singular catalyst" for forming the label. He met the band's songwriter, Josh Scott, while they both lived in Eau Claire, WI.

According to Vernon, "It was obvious to both of us, however, who the better writer was. Josh was writing songs that were both more mature and masterful than mine. His songs came from a perspective as snarly as Paul Westerberg, as enchanting as Neil Young, yet he wielded power as beguiling and unique as any songwriter I've ever heard."

Amateur Love featured current members of Megafaun. They were, Vernon wrote, "one of the most enigmatic and electrifying bands I have ever known."

Scroll past the tracklist to hear the album cut "Con/A Sewer/Cat."

Future releases from Chigliak reportedly include records by Sarah Siskind and 12 Rods.
