Jokers of the Scene

J0T5

Known primarily as remixers, Toronto, ON's DJ Booth and Chameleonic (aka Jokers of the Scene) aren't easy to pin down, stylistically. Elements of trance, kosmische and acid, to name a few of the things going on here, straddle straight-up techno. The end result sounds, at times, like a compressed history of electronic music sent through the party filter. "Black Mountie" has some nicely arpeggiated retro synth work, sounding not unlike electro-acoustic synth warriors Holy Fuck. "In Order to Trance" starts off as techno seguing into a fun homage to rave before making its steady climb into trance, and bookends "Killing Jokes I" and "Killing Jokes II" wouldn't be out of place on an Editions Mego release. J0T5 is a solid EP that will hopefully garner the Toronto duo more attention, especially with their J0T5 RMXD EP set to drop at the end of the month, featuring remixes from names such as Warp's Babe Rainbow, marking the start of their North American tour.
