Johnny Marr Taps Hans Zimmer for Next Solo Album

BY Alex HudsonPublished Oct 10, 2014

Johnny Marr only just released his new album Playland, but the former Smiths six-stringer has already lined up a big-name collaborator for his next project: Hollywood composer Hans Zimmer.

Zimmer and Marr worked together on the former's scores for Inception and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. While those projects found Marr playing a secondary role, this latest collaboration will flip that approach on its head.

"Johnny's work on film scores is great," Zimmer told BANG Showbiz. "I always want to work with Johnny, he's actually got a plan — I don't want to talk about it too much — and he's roped me into something now, we're going to be doing a bit of role reversal. I'm going to be his humble arranger, which is going to be fun. It will be a case of Johnny telling me what to do and I'll do it. It will be for his next album."

We're not sure what the timeline for this next album will be. Given that Marr has released solo LPs in consecutive years (2013 and 2014), it's possible that we won't have to wait too long hear what he's up to.

Meanwhile, Zimmer is playing a couple of shows in London this weekend — October 10 and 11 at the Eventim Hammersmith Apollo — and Marr is slated to make an appearance on guitar.
