Jessy Lanza Oh No No No EP

Jessy Lanza's Oh No No No EP is a set of three remixes that pair the songstress's illustrious vocal work with an eclectic mix of 8-bit nostalgia and pop culture references. A prevailing sense of '80s revivalism permeates the record, particularly through the use of quirky and vaporous FM synthesizers throughout.

The DVA [Hi:Emotions] version of "Going Somewhere" is a conceptual art project, seven epic minutes that sound more like an interpretive rendition of the original rather than a conventional remix. Sporadic vocal samples of Kim Kardashian are incorporated throughout, set against erratic analog sputters and the occasional cameo of Lanza's distinct falsetto. The distinct dexterity of Lanza's wispy, high-register vocal work emerges particularly on the DJ Taye and DJ Spinn remix of "Could B U," set against the aggressive pacing of Detroit house and dense arpeggios.

Overall, it's a diverse collection of remixes that deliberately abstain from cohesion or an over-aching theme. Oh No No No hints at the elasticity of Lanza's body of work, and the range of influences that other artists can approach it with. (Hyperdub)
