Jerry Leger 'Nonsense and Heartache' (album stream)

Toronto singer-songwriter Jerry Leger is set to serve up a heaping helping of new songs with his double album Nonsense and Heartache next week, but Exclaim! is giving you a chance to hear the whole thing right now.

The two-part record offers distinctly different but inherently connected sets of songs. First up, Nonsense showcases light-hearted "electric, bluesy, dirty rock and roll" with cuts like "Coat on the Rack," "The Big Smoke Blues" and "She's the Best Writer You've Never Heard Of."

The latter half of the double album deals with, well, Heartache. Slower, more sombre tunes like "Troubled Morn," "Another Dead Radio Star" and "Pawn Shop Piano" are accompanied by acoustic guitar, piano, fiddle, lap steel, upright bass and brushes on the drums.

The whole project was helmed by producer Michael Timmins, who initially pitched the idea of turning the songs into a 2-LP affair. "It's not an ego trip for either of us," Leger assures listeners, though. "It just felt like it made more sense to put them together, plus the fact that neither is overly long, just about 35 minutes each."

You can hear the final culmination of their work by scrolling past Leger's upcoming live shows and streaming Nonsense and Heartache down below. It's officially out March 31 via Latent Recordings.
