Chelsea Wolfe

Gloomy L.A. songstress Chelsea Wolfe unveiled her fifth proper album, Abyss, earlier this summer and re-released the Live at Roadburn concert recordings; now, the sombre L.A. songstress is performing pieces of these collections on a North American tour. The artist rises above swelling violins and sinister bass, weaving a sound that is as beautiful as it is bleak, danceable as it is lamentable. This week, Wolfe's electro-tinged gothic orchestra will play in Toronto and Montreal.

Jenny Hval

Norwegian singer-songwriter Jenny Hval has crafted five albums within the decade, the latest being Apocalypse, girl, which arrived earlier this summer. The record experiments with droning organs and synth, drum loops and spoken poetics that delve into dark subject matter, generating a haunting sound. Hval is currently touring to support the LP, and will treat Toronto and Montreal to her cryptic pleasures this week.

Modest Mouse

An eight-year waiting period came to an end in March when Modest Mouse released their sixth full-length album, Strangers to Ourselves. Despite nearly a decade without sharing new material, the American indie rockers satiated their fan base by reissuing old favourites and touring extensively; and once it arrived, Modest Mouse got right back on the road again. Their 2015 tour will feature tracks from the new collection, as well as classics like "3rd Planet" and "Float On." See the beloved band when they arrive in Montreal this week.
