Jack White Preps New Acoustic Live Releases

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Apr 4, 2016

If you were thinking some unplugged Jack White recordings would hit the spot this spring, you're in luck. A pair of rare acoustic performances from the artist are the focus of the next instalment of Third Man Records' Vault subscription series.

The label explains that the upcoming Vault package includes material captured during White's small-scale acoustic tour in 2015. As previously reported, the trip had him hitting venues in five U.S. states where he has never previously played a show.

First up in the collection is the double-LP Acoustic in Idaho. Pressed onto "Icy Idaho Blue vinyl," it features White's concert at Boise, ID's Egyptian Theater. Performing alongside a band comprising Dominic Davis, Fats Kaplin and Lillie Mae Rische, White presented a career-spanning set that reflected his solo career, as well as time spent in the White Stripes and the Raconteurs. He also tackled Howlin' Wolf's "I Asked for Water (She Gave Me Gasoline)" and Leadbelly's "Goodnight Irene."

Below, you'll find a stream of the evening's mandolin-manned run-through of White Stripes classic "Sugar Never Tasted So Good."

The Vault package also includes a DVD titled Live in Anchorage, which chronicles the acoustic tour's stop in Alaska.

Additionally, the Vault instalment includes a book called Pictures from Unknown States. The 52-page travelogue features up-close and intimate shots taken throughout the tour by David James Swanson. Two Risograph prints of Swanson's are also included.

In related news, Third Man Records is gearing up for Record Store Day with a trio of fresh releases. It will be offering up a White Stripes double-LP, Peel Sessions, which contains two full sessions the band had recorded with legendary DJ John Peel in the early 2000s.

White's recent appearance on The Muppets, which yielded a performance of Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," will also be pressed onto "It's Not Easy Being Green Colored Vinyl™," while the B-52s' Kate Pierson will have a two-song single coming out as part of Third Man Records' ongoing "Blue Series" of 7-inches.
