Vancouver's self-proclaimed "makeout music" trio I M U R have shared another new single from their forthcoming new album My Molecules. Today, they've dropped "Sad Girls Club" alongside a music video from director Sterling Larose.
Amine Bouzaher, who calls the track "an epic, dark banger," said of the project: "It's always amazing to see what incredible art and positivity can come from channelling negative thoughts and feelings."
I M U R vocalist Jenny Lea explained the inspiration for the track in a statement:
As the name states, and we've joked about since our inception, we just want to make songs you can cry to in the club. The song was inspired by the first month of quarantine, when all of my daily distractions came to a halt, and a lot of my demons came to visit. Self-doubt, depression, and addiction quickly bubbled up when I didn't feel I had purpose, and writer's block became a harsh reality. "Sad Girls Club" was my breakthrough from the block, but also by expressing my fears in a tangible way, it helped to pull me out of the mud.
"Sad Girls Club" follows the release of the album's lead single "Case of You," which saw the group teaming up with beatmaker Mikey J Blige, as well as Sebastian Hill-Esbrand and Wallop Film for the accompanying music video.
Both songs will appear on the Exclaim! Class of 2020 grads' upcoming third studio album, which is set to arrive in full on June 25. The record narrates Lea's struggles with addiction, difficult past loves, and her ways of "coping with a near-death experience that almost derailed her music journey."
The group will celebrate the release of the album with a special virtual show titled "My Molecules the Experience" on July 3. Further details about their release party are forthcoming.
