Former One Direction star Harry Styles has reportedly turned down the role of Prince Eric in Disney's upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.

The Wrap broke the news that Styles had rejected the role after AMC Theatres and Regal Cinemas incorrectly tweeted that he had been confirmed as Prince Eric.

According to Variety, initial reports about his casting were premature, and Styles made a decision to "move on amicably."

A casting decision for the role has yet to be confirmed or announced, though the studio is actively pursuing other options.

Already confirmed to appear in the film are Halle Bailey, who will play the title role of Ariel, and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.

Rob Marshall will direct the film. It will feature songs from the animated 1989 version of the film, as well as originals composed by Alan Menken with words by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
