Grimes' music output has been heating back up lately. Following the launch of her AI girl group NPC and their single "A Drug from God," the futuristic pop visionary has shared her previously teased single "Player of Games."
The song is a sci-fi pop banger with melancholy lyrics about a "cold expanse of space." It's a clubby, rave-inspired dance tune co-produced by Grimes and Illangelo, sounding halfway between the ethereal pop she usually makes and the straight-up EDM of NPC. The song comes with a lyric video, showing Grimes cuddling some sort of knight.
The single seems to be a part of a project called Book 1, although it's not totally clear what that is. Grimes tweeted, "And so the BOOK 1 era begins." The caption on the "Player of Games" lyric video reads, "Chapter 1 of Book 1 by Grimes." Stay tuned for further chapters.
