Before there was Fucked Up's immense David Comes to Life, the punk rock musical on everybody's mind was Green Day's American Idiot. The 2004 album has been a hit in its live Broadway adaptation since opening in 2010, and as reported last spring, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetsman are in the midst of turning it into a motion picture through their company Playtone Productions. Now, we've got word that Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong will star as the lead character.
Now that it's confirmed, the news might sound a little obvious, but the timeless stories of meddling Hollywood execs mean that anyone could have been put in the role. Imagine if they had chosen Zac Efron!
Like the musical, the film version of American Idiot will also be directed by Michael Mayer. In addition to the Green Day musical, Mayer has helmed many Broadway successes including Spring Awakening and You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, among others.
Aside from those details, further information on the American Idiot film is unknown, but it is expected in cinemas by 2013.
