Slick down your devilocks and polish your Crimson Ghost tattoos, you bunch of fiends, because the impossible has just happened: Glenn Danzig has announced he's reuniting with the Misfits for a pair of gigs. Lodi, NJ's greatest horror punk band will Walk Among Us again as part of this year's Riot Fest.
A press release confirms that Danzig has patched things up with bassist Jerry Only to headline this September's Riot Fest Rodeo in Denver and the Riot Fest & Carnival in Chicago. Billed as "the Original Misfits," they'll be joined by longtime guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein. It's as yet unclear who will be sitting behind the drums.
The performances are notable in that this will be the first time Danzig and Only have been onstage together since 1983. That year, the group would break up, with Danzig going on to form Samhain and later his blues- and metal-minded Danzig project. Only revived the Misfits in 1995 and has maintained a revolving lineup since then.
Despite branching off into a different direction, Danzig has still stayed attached to the Misfits brand. His series of "Legacy" concerts had him and Doyle bashing out Misfits classics for ghouls worldwide.
The reunion is also notable since the relationship between Danzig and fellow Misfits founder Only has been nothing short of acrimonious over the years. Even as recently as 2014, the then former bandmates were battling it out in court over merchandising royalties. A judge had thrown out Danzig's claims that Only had violated the terms of a contract the two had signed in 1994, for which the singer was seeking $75,000 in damages.
For the time being, it appears as if these may be the only two shows for "the Original Misfits," but keep your bony fingers crossed that the group go out and kill it for another few nights.
The Denver Riot Fest runs September 2 to 4, while the Chicago edition takes place September 16 to 18. As previously reported, the fest is unfortunately skipping over Toronto this year.
