Dave Hurlow was a member of the Darcys, and these days, he plays bass in Nightshades and makes solo music as Decafwolf. Now, he's about to publish his first novel: Deep Sea Feline, a magical realism story about a failing musician.

A synopsis from publisher Latitude 46 describes Deep Sea Feline as "a sumptuous romp of a novel featuring a cast of otherworldly creatures, musicians, opera singers and painters who are tasked with saving their city and restoring the equilibrium of life." It's about a failing artist who turns his career around using music created by a mysterious creature who visits him through paintings.

In an endorsement for the novel, Broken Social Scene's Charles Spearin called Deep Sea Feline "serious fun," saying Hurlow is "one of those rare writers who can dig deep into the bag of weird but still somehow engineer a brilliant plot with lovable characters."

Hurlow will launch Deep Sea Feline with a Toronto release party on September 23 at Division 88. He will perform as Decafwolf; Christopher Shannon is also on the bill.

Previously, Hurlow published a 2014 short story collection called Hate Letters from Buddhists.

Deep Sea Feline is available to purchase digitally or on paperback. It officially comes out on September 23.
