At long last, Fever Ray is back. The daring, shape-shifting solo project of the Knife's Karen Dreijer, Fever Ray's last album was 2017's Plunge; new single "What They Call Us" is their first release since 2019's Live at Troxy and Plunge Remix.
The song is a rubbery, undulating thing that combines the danceability of Plunge with some of the chill that defined 2009's seminal Fever Ray. "Did you hear what they call us? / Did you hear what they said? / My plan was flexible / Don't get stuck anywhere," Dreijer sings.
The video for "What They Call Us" — which finds Dreijer decked in a smiley-face necktie in a drab, otherworldly office that doubles as a rave warehouse — was written and directed by Martin Falck.
